Sexual Politics of Meat/Feminism

Last night, December 2nd I went to Carol Adams presentation in Kedzie Auditorium. Adams wrote the book, The Sexual Politics of Meat. This presentation took over a year to cordinate, so it was amazing to finally see her, Adams is a feminist and vegetarian.
I am a feminist, but in NO WAY a vegetarian. So i was a little scarred to see what the two put together would be like.
Carol Adams was a complete tom-boy when she was younger, but eventually got those pon pons and stood on the sidelines...thats it though. SIDE LINE. girls cheering boys on. it wasnt boys cheering the girls on. It never has been. And so began her feminist outlook.
During the presentation Carol brought up different advertisements to prove her point.
EAT LIKE A MAN. MAN EATS MEAT.
And women are supposed to SERVE the meat to HER man.

This video is SO sexist. But the main point is that they take one of the greatest women impowering songs ever and turn it into a mans song. they push not a "mans vehicle" over, but a womens (mini van). He doesnt want to eat "chick" food. Because...that would make him weak. This video is connecting men to meat. men being superior.

David Lynch entered this in a cow parade. Every cow that went down new york in the parade was happy or cute. David Lynch to show everyone what were actually doing to cows. When this entered the street children started crying.

Okay, below is a picture of Latoya Jackson. This is one photo from the Playboy shoot. The photo shoot had her posing with snakes and in bamboo (exotic:racist?).
The real racist part was that the articles name was: Free At Last...
Bc she wasnt really free (m.l. king) until she was sexually exposing herself. right?!?!?  HORRIBLE.

Here is another commercial. Honestly. This is bad.
Advertised pigs are ALMOST ALWAYS white trash looking pigs, with their booty showing.

Those are a few examples that she showed us.
She had 9 feminist-vegan points. When i first read these I didnt understand and thought some were crazy...but she explained them and now I get it.
1. meat-eating is associated with virility, masculinity. meat eating societies gain male identification by their choice of food.
2. animals are the absent refernts in the consumption of meat. the function of the absent referent is to allow for the moral abandonment of a being.
3. a process of objectificatio/fragmentation/consumtion conncts women and animals in a patriarchal culture. the cisual joke that substitures on fragmentated object for another can be found throughout our culture.
4. as an ecofeminist theory, it recognizes the environmetal costs of animalizing protein. all protein is from plants; animalized protein requires that a living animal process the protein and then be killed. Meat production contributes to water pollution, climate change, habit fragmentation and desertification of arable land.
5. Female animals are the absent referents in meat eating and in the consumption of dairy/eggs. there would be no meat eating if female animals weren't constantly made pregnant. female animals are forced to produce feminized protein.
6. women are animalized/animals are sexualized and feminized.
7. anthropornography naturalizes sexual trafficking in and use of women.
8. Carnophallogocentrism and the construction of the (male-identified) subject. A term coined by French theorist Derrida in an attempt to name the primary social, linguistic and material practices that go into becoming a subject within the west; Derrida was showing how explicit carnivorism lies at the heart of classical notions of subjectivity, especially male subjectivity.
9. resistance through a feminist ethics of care. feminist ethics of care is a political ethic: it understands that ideology influences how we choose whom to care about. it also helps us recognize how images/representations are working.

These were the 9 points touched on, in the program. She explained each of them, so that we all better understood them.

Here are a few pictures from the event!
Notice the picture on the screen, as well as Adams on the right behind the podium!
